Where you rest your head on a journey can greatly affect the experience, one way or another. I'll be the first to admit to being kind of picky about hotels. Happily, our temporary homes away from home in Portugal were, themselves, among the highlights of the trip.
We experienced five hotels along the way, each with its own character.
2. M'ar De Ar Aqueduto, Évora
This is a "wow" hotel. It's modern and luxurious, set at the foot of an ancient aqueduct. When can I go back?
3. hotel real d'óbidos, óbidos
Another classic hotel with a hint of medieval style.
4. riversuites, coimbra
Slightly more modest yet updated, comfortable, and fitted with everything I needed—very European.
5. vintage house hotel, pinhão
My oh my, what a place! Classic in a traditional way, with amenities I'd like to enjoy during a long stay sometime.
6. grande hotel do porto, porto
The ground-floor common areas are grand and wonderful—lavishly old-world—as are the views from the rooftop terrace! The room had some catching up to do in the style category but was comfortable nonetheless.
